About Pinellas County

Pinellas County is located in west-central Florida, and has a population of about 920,000 people. Along with Citrus County and Polk County, it is understood to be part of the Tampa Bay Area. The county seat of Pinellas County is Clearwater, yet the largest city is St. Petersburg. Pinellas County is situated on a peninsula; the name, "Pinellas", coming from the Spanish word "Punta Pinal", meaning Piney Point.

In the early 16th century, Pinellas County was inhabited by the Tocobaga people; however, when the Spanish began to venture into the area, European disease annihilated the natives. The Spanish eventually ceded the territory to the United States in the 19th century and the peninsula begun to be settled and farmed. The county was officially formulated in 1912, when Pinellas residents complained that their former county was neglecting their area and called to secede.
